Decorating childrens bedrooms

Time to have some fun and let your imagination run wild...let's look at some fun ways to decorate childrens bedrooms

Decorating a childrens bedroom

What is not to love about the opportunity to decorating childrens bedrooms? The fun and possibilities are endless. All the restrictions we have for the rest of the house mean nothing here. In the childrens rooms we can let our imaginations run wild, revert to being a child, what would you love? What would your child love? Now I’m not suggesting that you hand over the reins to your four-year-old child and embrace the chaos, however I do suggest taking snippets of ideas and things that your child is passionate about and use them as inspiration.

Fun Walls
Is your child is crazy for Lego? Then how about a Lego wall? Not only does this look cool, but it will also bring hours of fun, with the bonus of the Lego being on the wall and not the floor waiting to be stood on by the unsuspecting adult!

Is your child a budding artist? Black board walls work a treat for those creative minds and speaking from experience the children never tire of them, still using them into teenage years, albeit it become less about drawing unicorns and more about the coolest tags. If you can’t dedicate an entire wall to a blackboard, then how about painting wardrobe fronts? Make the most of what is available to you to get the best out of the space.

Take you and your little paleontologist back to the Jurassic period or don your space suit and take a flight into space with stunning mural wallpaper. The improved use of digital printing means that mural wallpaper is readily available these days in so many genres and at reasonable prices too; they are not only great for kids’ rooms, but they also work well in office spaces and around the home on large walls. I have recently used photowall.co.uk and I’m very pleased with the service and product.

Colour
When it comes to colour this is where we can get super creative. Colour is not limited to all walls being painted in one colour or having a feature wall; here we can be playful with design. Let’s for examples sake decide on the colour yellow (it's bright and fun), we could paint the bottom half of the room and window reveals in yellow, this creates a bright zesty space with added interest and fun around the windows. Try a scalloped edge; again, this is added interest and fun. Flip traditional on its head, although it may be what we are used to, white woodwork and coloured walls does not have to be how we do things…be brave, try yellow woodwork including doors and a white wall. Could the ceiling of your space themed room be a deep blue with lighter coloured walls? Be playful with colour but if you are unsure, I'd advise speaking with an interior stylist/colour specialist.

Lighting Fun
Lighting in a children’s room can play a significant part in mood and determine if it’s play time, chill time or bedtime. I recommend working with such a three-light system: Fun – playtime, Soft – chill time and very low – bedtime and overnight.

By fun lighting I really mean zesty and bright, bespoke Neon lights in your child's name or family phrase for example alongside overhead lighting. Let it be fun and something stimulating, try not to forget the pure joy these things would have brought to you as a child. Bespoke neon lights are now readily available online at very reasonable prices.

When it is time to start winding down and time for a story a soft light is best. I like soft pendent lighting for this or a soft bedside light.
This can be made interesting by being creative with installation, for example hang clusters together at various heights with low wattage/lumens light bulbs (I would suggest 40 watts/450 lumens or lower if clustering). If you are creating a space themed room, you could cluster the lighting to look like planets. If you want to create a skyscape on the ceiling, why not create a cluster of soft clouds. Remember the aim of the game here is to create an environment where your child can wind down approaching bedtime.

On to bedtime. Here I like to use warm low light LED strip lights. I like these for three reasons: they are easy to install/use, they can be placed almost anywhere you like with ease; however, I like to use with around the bottom of the bed or around skirting to use as guide in and out of the room for toilet trips and you can control the lighting colour and brightness. I’m sure I don’t need to point out the need for these lights to be very soft and low, really, they are acting as a comfort to the child that is uncertain of the dark.

Storage
When it comes to storage, I feel there are two types of storage needed for a children's room. I believe there are two types of ‘stuff’. The stuff that should be stored away out of sight and the stuff that can be displayed nicely. Decide which is which, for example the odd pencil or a half-used tub of play dough, I would place in a storage container out of sight, perhaps in under bed storage or a drawer. Nice books and toys can be displayed on shelves providing easy access rather than having to trawl through various boxes and drawers. Top tip: if you have young children, fun storage boxes, jars etc. are a great way to encourage little ones to tidy up after themselves.

Window dressing
It’s very important to get window dressing right in a child's room. Obviously from an interior styling point of view we want them to look amazing but from a sanity point of view we need them to function well. Sleep is the key here; we need children to sleep and therefore blackout is best in this situation. I like a combination of a blackout blind and a curtain, for me this is because it’s another chance to play with colour and texture. Adding little extras like pom-pom trims work well. One of my favorite themes when my daughter was young was a circus tent theme, here I could play with pattern and colour to my heart’s content. I added ‘circus bunting trim’ to the curtains and blind.

To conclude then, with a child's bedroom; be brave, be bold, think like a child and outside of the box…and most of all have fun!
